Africa: Lake Tanganyika; common in tributaries rivers (Lukuga River, Ruzizi River, Nua River)(Ref. 4983). In the Lukuga River (Lake Tanganyika outflow), known up to the Kisimba-Kilia rapids (Ref. 93587).

Conspicuous irregular dark marks on the head.
Adults inhabit inshore areas of the lake and lower reaches of rivers (Ref. 4967). Females brood their young in the mouth (Ref. 86760).
