Vertebrae: 26. Color of adults white with a broad brown bar on the head; 3 brownish yellow bars on the body; a large black saddle on the caudal peduncle (lacking in juveniles); and orange-yellow spinous portion on dorsal fin. Young with a large elliptical black spot basally and below posterior half of the soft part of dorsal fin, extending onto anterior part of the caudal peduncle, followed by a bright white spot.
