Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 65-78; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 46 - 56; Vertebrae: 36 - 38. Dorsal origin with first 5-6 rays on the blind side. Caudal deep and rounded. Pectorals moderately long, bluntly pointed.

Found on flat bottoms and rocky areas (Ref. 2850). Young are common in shallow water during the summer but adults frequently in deeper water (Ref. 6885).
