Etymology: Calamus: Greek, kalamos = reed, cane (Ref. 45335).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; reef-associated; depth range 3 - 80 m (Ref. 9344), usually 3 - 18 m. Subtropical; 29°N - 8°S, 115°W - 77°W
Eastern Pacific: southern California, USA to Peru; rare north of Baja California, Mexico.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 61.0 cm TL male/unsexed; (Ref. 2850); max. published weight: 2.3 kg (Ref. 9344)
Inhabits sandy areas to about 69 m depth but usually from 3-18 m. The young occur in very shallow water on reef flats and in sandy bays over mixed sand and rock bottoms (Ref. 5592). Probably feeds on benthic invertebrates (Ref. 9344). Only caught incidentally with trawls (Ref. 9344).
