Asia: middle and lower Mekong basin and in lowland rivers throughout Thailand, the Malay Peninsula and Java, Indonesia (Ref. 10429). Has been successfully introduced to Singapore (Ref. 38466).

A conspicuous black blotch at the tip of the spinous dorsal fin; a dark vertically elongated blotch behind the upper extremity of the gill opening (may be very weak or absent); the second anal spine not much enlarged.
Inhabits medium to large-sized rivers and flooded fields of the middle Mekong (Ref. 12975). Found in the basin-wide tributary of the lower Mekong (Ref. 36667). Occurs in lowland swamps and rivers (Ref. 57235). Oviparous (Ref. 205).
