Etymology: Synodus: Greek, syn, symphysis = grown together + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335); rubromarmoratus: Named rubromarmoratus (adjective), referring to the characteristic red marbled coloration of the living fish.

This species is characterized by the following: number of lateral-line scales 53-55; anterior and posterior palatine teeth same length; teeth on the tongue 14-25 and peritoneal spots 11-12; when preserved, with eight greyish diamond-shaped markings (Ref. 137743).
