Remarks Exhibits sexual dimorphism only in mature individuals. Mature males with the pre-suborbital area thickened, but not calloused, like a swollen mound extending obliquely from the suborbital area to base of the outer rostral barbel. The pectoral fin of mature males in most other species of the same genus is thickened, stiffened, or broadened, or calloused on its dorsal side, but this kind of character is not shown in the mature males of this species (Ref. 80923).

Diagnosis

Distinguished from all congeners by the unique combination of the following characters: dorsal-fin rays 3,8½ -9½ ; anal-fin rays 3,5- 5½ ; pectoral-fin rays 1,11; scales absent; two saddle-like dark blotches with fuzzy borders cranial to the dorsal fin and four saddle-like dark blotches caudal to the dorsal fin; distal margin of dorsal fin emarginate; pelvic fin reaching caudally almost to the anus; anus located immediately cranial to the origin of the anal fin;

caudal fin forked; caudal chamber of air bladder reduced to a small free protuberance; head slightly laterally compressed, head depth greater than head width at nape; caudal peduncle length 18.0-20.0% of SL; caudal peduncle depth 7.8-8.4% of SL; eye diameter 17.6-21.4% of HL; body depth 60.7-70.2% of HL; caudal peduncle depth 39.1-45.0% of caudal peduncle

length; body width at the base of caudal peduncle 59.0-68.0% of body depth at the base of caudal peduncle (Ref. 80923).
