Diagnosis

Diagnosis: last simple dorsal-fin ray smooth on hind margin; scale formula 5.5/25-29/4.5; 1.5 scales between lateral line and pelvic-fin base; 9-10 scales around caudal peduncle; lateral-line scales equal in size to the normal scales; 7 branched dorsal fin rays; no barbels; lateral line incomplete, deeply depressed below dorsal fin; maximum reported size 47 mm SL (Ref. 2940, 81282).

Description: dorsal profile convex, slightly depressed at level of head; Ref. 3009 reports specimen with small tubercle at corner of mouth, probably representing vestige of a posterior barbel; lateral line incomplete with only 5-11 pored scales, curving distinctly downwards below dorsal fin; distal dorsal-fin margin convex; last simple dorsal-fin ray well developed, ossified at base; gill rakers short; D:III,7; A:III,5; P:12-14; V:I,7 (Ref. 2940, 81282).

Coloration: general appearance yellowish, back greyish; small round spot at end of caudal peduncle; some individuals have more or less distinct dark longitudinal bands on sides; pectorals dark; dorsal, anal, pelvic fins bright orange; caudal yellowish in life; males completely blackish with white tubercles on snout during breeding season (Ref. 2940, 81282).
