Originally reported from the Malabon River, Rizal, Philippines, which has meanwhile been reclaimed. First described by Herre in 1927 and was rediscovered in 1950 at Dagatdagatan Saltwater Fishery Experimental Station in Malabon (Ref. 4924). Reported in the sea at Culion Island, off Palawan (Ref. 6216). Also reported from Taal Lake (Ref. 12165). Endemism questionable since this species is also reported from other countries (Kottelat, pers. comm.). Also Ref. 439, 2060, 4924, 48613, 94476.
