Occurs in all rivers with good water quality, well-oxygenated and with a gravel bottom. Legal minimum size is 23 cm, sometimes 18 cm in the mountains and 25 cm on the plains (Ref. 30578). Can be protected under "Arrêté de biotope du 8-1261988. Ancestral form in "Annexe II de la Directive Habitats-faune-flore" and considered as endangered species (Ref. 40476).
