Asia: Endemic to the Amur River system. Two morphs, brown and gray, represent the species in the Amur River basin. Occurrence in the Sea of Japan (Ref. 11102) needs confirmation.

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 38-53; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 20 - 32. Body shields in 5 rows; dorsal shields 11 to 15, lateral shields 32 to 47 and ventral 7 to 10.

Adults occur in stretches of rivers with sandy or stony bottom. Feed on benthic organisms. Highly prized fish (Ref. 41072).
