Description Situated on the Estonian/Russian border. Fourth largest lake in Europe with a surface area of 3555 sq. km, mean water level of 30 m asl. A polymictic and shallow lake with a mean depth of 7.1 m and a maximum depth of 15.3 m. It is elongated in the north–south direction for over 150 km and consists of three limnologically different parts: Lake Peipsi s. s. (Peipsi sensu stricto, proper), the largest and deepest northern part (2611 km2, mean depth 8.3 m, maximum depth 12.9 m); Lake Pskov, the southern and most shallow part (708 km2, mean depth 3.8 m, maximum depth 5.3 m); and, Lake Lämmijärv, the middle strait-like part (236 km2 , mean depth 2.5 m, maximum depth 15.3 m). Together hese three form a single water body. The catchment area (including the lake surface) is 47,800 km2.
