Etymology: Nototheniops: Greek, noton = filament + Greek, adverbial particle, then, that denotes distance or removal + Greek, opsis = appearance (Ref. 45335);  mizops: mizops from Greek mizon = larger + ops = eye (Ref. 11892).

Espinas dorsales (total): 4 - 5; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 34-37; Radios blandos anales: 33 - 35. Body with two series of large, partly confluent, irregular blackish spots, cheek with two oblique dark stripes, a blackish spot on spinous dorsal (Ref. 11892).

Spawns in May-June, sometimes to July. Egg diameter greater than 1.65 mm (Ref. 45488).
