Etymology: Amatitlania: Named for the type locality of the type species; 'Amatitlán' means 'a place abundant in amate' in Nahuatl, 'amate' is a kind of rustic paper made from the bark of Ficus petiolaris or Ficus indica.;  coatepeque: Named for its type locality, Lake Coatepeque; noun in apposition.

Short description Morfologia | Morfometria

Spine dorsali (totale): 17 - 19; Raggi dorsali molli (totale): 7-9; Spine anali 8-10; Raggi anali molli: 6 - 7; Vertebre: 28. This species is characterized by the following: fourth bar on side of body Y-shaped, this is formed by ventral coalescence of 4th and 5th bars; posterior end of dentigerous arm of dentary triple-spined, squarish or bluntly pointed; with double medial-loop in the gut; differs from its congeners in having a posteriad projection at dorsal corner in lower lip (vs. absent), peritoneal pigmentation is uniformly sparse (vs. uniformly dark or silvery), 5-5.5 (vs. 5 or fewer) scales from lateral line to origin of dorsal fin (Ref. 74403).
