Etymology: Kenyaconger: Named for the east African nation of Kenya, off whose coastthe type species was collected.; heemstrai: Named for Philip C. Heemstra who collected and preserved the holotype while on board the 'Fridjof Nansen'; in recognition of his many contributions to our knowledge of the fishes of the western Indian Ocean (Ref. 50529).

The species has the following characters: snout short, bluntly rounded; posterior nostril opening ventrally from a tube on upper lip behind labial flange; maxillary and mandibular teeth biserial anteriorly, uniserial posteriorly, compressed and incisor-like, closely appressed (Ref. 50529).
