Espinas dorsales (total): 2 - 3; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 7-8; Espinas anales 3; Radios blandos anales: 11 - 14. Compressed body, dorsal fin inserted behind the origin of pelvic fins. Mouth subterminal, lower jaw at an angle of 25-40° to the horizontal. Pharyngeal teeth 5-5. Silvery body with a dark lateral band.
