Western Atlantic: Massachusetts, USA and Bermuda through the Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. Most abundant member of the genus Haemulon along the eastern coast of Florida (Ref. 26938).

Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205).
