Teleostei (teleosts) > Characiformes (Characins) > Alestidae (African tetras)
Etymology: Brycinus: Greek, ebrykon, brykomai = to bite, to gnaw (Ref. 45335).
More on author: Boulenger.

Issue
Paugy & Shaefer (2007: Ref. 80290) put the validity of the species in doubt as being a morphotype of Brycinus macrolepidotus Valenciennes 1850. This requires confirmation most likely with genetics studies (Paugy, pers, comm., 21 Mar. 2013). This species is placed in the genus Alestes Müller & Troschel, 1844 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver.Feb. 2013: Ref. 93002) following Paugy (1984: Ref. 5331). Treated here under the genus Brycinus following Paugy (1986: Ref. 42019).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01000 (0.00244 - 0.04107), b=3.04 (2.81 - 3.27), in cm total length, based on all LWR estimates for this body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.1   ±0.4 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (12 of 100).
