Diagnostic characters: distinguished from M. octodecemspinosus by deeper head, and development of 2 supraorbital spines at 12-14 mm TL. Pigmentation: small group of tiny spots just anterior to anus at 8-10 mm which disappears later. Sequence of fin formation: pectoral (8.5-14.0 mm TL); caudal (8.5-16.0 mm TL); anal (10.5-16.0 mm TL); dorsal (10.5-16.0 mm TL); pelvic (14.0-18.0 mm TL).
