  Etymology of generic noun
Greek, galaxias, ou = a kind of fish (Ref. 45335).
  Etymology of specific epithet
Name from Latin 'olida', 'olid' or 'olidum', meaning to smell or foul smelling, stinking, the name remains unclear as live or freshly preserved individuals are not known to impart a distinctive odour, with the holotype currently smells only of preservative. Probably the liquid the holotype was originally preserved in, or later transferred to, may have had a distinctive odour at the time the description was made, but this is purely conjecture.
