ex Loefling 1758 [1751-1756]. May also refer to Mycteroperca cidi Cervigón, 1966, or Mycteroperca interstitialis (Poey, 1860). It cannot be Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834). See Ref. 6512 for a detailed account (and Ref. 5222).

Name from Latin 'labrum' for lip, rim or edge; referring to the big lips of the fishes of the genus (from Ovid and Pliny according to Petrus Artedi).
  Etymology of specific epithet  
Most probably a misspelling of the specific epithet because based on Labrus guaza Loefling 1758:104 (type locality: Cumana, Venezuela) (see CofF).
