  Comment
Author from Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Nov. 1999: Ref. 33021). Considered as a synonym of Thryssa baelama by Whitehead et al. (1988, Ref. 189); however, it is based on the same manuscript description as S. commersonii, hence a synonym.
  Etymology of generic noun
Latin, clupea = sardine, derived from Clupeus = shield; doubtless a reference to the scales covering the body of the fish + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335).
