Family:  Labridae (Wrasses), subfamily: Corinae
Max. size:  17 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 2 - 30 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: East Africa to Marshall Islands, north to southern Japan, south to the Great Barrier Reef and Tonga.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 9-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-11; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 11-11. Greenish with pink markings on dark substrate. Very pale when on white sand substrates and dorsal spots is lost in large males (Ref. 48636).
Biology:  Adults inhabit clear lagoon and seaward reefs to over 15 m (Ref. 9710) and nearby sand-rubble bottoms at 2-30 m, solitarily or in small groups (Ref. 90102). Food consist of small crabs and gastropods.

Country info:  Type locality: Batu Is. (Ref. 48636). Known from Bali (Ref. 8631, 47567) and Mentawai Islands (Ref. 27157). Also recorded from Raja Ampat Islands, Maumere Bay, Komodo, Manado and vicinity, Pulau Seribu, Sangalakki Island, Togean and Banggai Islands and Pulau Weh (Ref. 47567). Museum: RMNH 6642. Molucca Is., RMNH 2254. Flores, RMNH 14331. Sulawesi, Kabaena I., USNM uncat. Batu, BMNH 1864.5.15.34 (holotype of Julis batuensis Bleeker) (Ref. 33411). Only known from the type specimen, but the area of the type locality off the west of Sumatra coast is relatively unexplored and it seems restricted to that area. The markings of the head and fins are distinct (Ref. 48636).
