Max. size:  15 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; brackish; marine
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean and Southeast Atlantic: Mozambique Island to Table Bay, South Africa.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 9-10. Body with thin dark bars; pectoral base dusky (Ref. 2798).
Biology:  Epibenthic, intertidal in pools, sometimes in mud (Ref. 4343).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Ranges from Mossel Bay to the mouth of the Xora River (Ref. 4343). Museum: Little Brak River, Cape of Good Hope, type locality of Gobius gilchristi, BMNH 1898.10:2-4 (syntypes). Buffalo River, E. Cape Province, RUSI 32482 (Ref. 12725). Also Ref. 11344.
