Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Smiliogastrinae
Max. size:  7 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 11.9 g
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; pH range: 6 - 8; dH range: 5 - 19; depth range 0 - 5 m
Distribution:  Asia: Red River basin, southwestern China, including Hainan (Ref. 43281). Widely transported around the world (Ref. 1739).
Diagnosis:  Body with 4-7 narrow bars, more or less complete or dissociated into series of spots; complete lateral line; last simple dorsal ray serrated posteriorly; yellowish in color (Ref. 43281).
Biology:  Adults feed on worms, crustaceans, insects, plant matter (Ref. 7020) and detritus (Ref. 5258). Aquarium keeping: in groups of 5 or more individuals; minimum aquarium size 60 cm (Ref. 51539).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 20 September 2011 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Found in the Red River basin in southwestern China, Hainan (Ref. 43281). Also found in Beijiang River (Ref. 89718). Known from the Mekong (=Lancang Jiang) River system (Ref. 38630). Occurrence in the Mekong basin in Yunnan probably result from introduction (Ref. 43281). Recorded from Guangxi Province (Ref. 45620). Also Ref. 4537, 26563, 35840, 85799.
