Environment:  pelagic-neritic; brackish; marine; depth range - 0 m
Distribution:  Western Central Atlantic: Venezuela to Brazil. Rhode Island to Florida (USA), Gulf of Mexico. Pacific Ocean. (Ref. 26938). A recognized subspecies Hyporhamphus roberti hildebrandi occurs in Belize and Colombia.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  An inshore surface schooling species frequently entering brackish estuaries and adjacent areas. Mainly utilized as bait fish.
