Family:  Myctophidae (Lanternfishes), subfamily: Gymnoscopelinae
Max. size:  14.6 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; marine, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Generally ranges between the Subtropical Convergence and the Antarctic Polar Front (Atlantic Sector to south of Australia/New Zealand), but with northern extensions in eastern boundary currents; absent in the sub-Antarctic region of the Pacific. There is a beach-washed specimen from Port Alfred, South Africa (Ref. 4066). Also found in Argentina (Ref. 86326) and Uruguay (Ref. 54736).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 18-20; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 16-19
Biology:  Oceanic (Ref. 4066). Also mesopelagic. Occurs at depths below 100 m at night. Recorded from the stomach contents of Dissostichus eleginoides.
