Family:  Ophidiidae (Cusk-eels), subfamily: Neobythitinae
Max. size:  41 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 1355 - 2820 m
Distribution:  Indian Ocean: between 9°49'S and 14°51'S, and between 60°42'E and 114°53'E. Western Pacific: Gulf of Tomini, Sulawesi, Indonesia and off Japan. Eastern Pacific: off Colombia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 124-124; Anal soft rays: 104-104; Vertebrae: 68. Snout inflated; eyes much smaller than snout; opercular spine absent; preopercle without spines and posteriorly expanded almost reaching posterior margin of opercle; lower pectoral radial with ventral process, lower pectoral fin rays extended well beyond anus in ripe males but not in unripe males and females; median basibranchial tooth patch 1; pseudobranchial filaments 2; (Ref. 34024).
Biology:  Uncommon species (Ref. 34024). Oviparous, with oval pelagic eggs floating in a gelatinous mass (Ref. 205).
