Vertebrae: 38-41. Diagnosed from congeners by the possession of the following characters: large eye, diameter 26-29% HL, equal to or larger than snout length; conical snout, not stout, terminal mouth; thickened skin especially in adults during spawning season; scales distinct or not, covering whole body, often narrowly to widely separated in particular in pre-pelvic area; lateral line interrupted or not, usually ending on caudal peduncle; and pored lateral line scales usually 54-70 (Ref. 59043). |

Inhabits streams, lakes and springs with clear water. Enters subterranean waters during winter or droughts (Ref. 59043). Threatened due to pollution and habitat destruction (Ref. 26100). |
