Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  South America: Amazon River basin, in the upper Aripuanã River in the Madeira River drainage.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 19-21; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-14; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 9-12; Vertebrae: 35-35. Easily distinguished from all other species of the genus by having a row of dark blotches forming a more or less continuous band along the abdominal side, and by having infraorbitals 3 and 4 co-ossified instead of separate. Differs from most Crenicichla species in having a smooth-margined instead of serrated preopercle (Ref. 26677).
