Family:  Syngnathidae (Pipefishes and seahorses), subfamily: Syngnathinae
Max. size:  20 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 0 - 50 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: northeastern Florida and northern Gulf of Mexico in USA, and Bahamas to CuraƧao. Reported from southeastern Brazil (Ref. 35833).
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Coastal species (Ref. 26938), found in seagrass beds. A cryptic species. Avoids areas with lowered salinity (Ref. 26938). Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205).
