Careproctus carinatus Chernova, 2015
Keel-belly tadpolefish

Family:  Liparidae (Snailfishes)
Max. size:  13.1 cm TL (female)
Environment:  pelagic-neritic; marine; depth range 0 - 30 m
Distribution:  Arctic: Kara Sea.
Diagnosis:
Biology:  The holotype was collected in the southwestern part of the Kara Sea, by pelagic trawling at surface layer 0-30 m above the 120 m depth where the surface water was warm (6.0 - 7.7°C); with a sharp termocline detected from 19-23 m, and the temperature dropped to negative values, and then it stay negative (-0.64°C) down to the bottom. Salinity also changed from 32.72ppt at surface to 34.6% at near bottom layer. Most likely that this species stay in cold water below the termocline layer, where the forage zooplankton organisms are concentrated. Amphipod specimen was also found in throat of the fish , which might suggest that it feeds on crustaceans (Ref. 116680)..
IUCN Red List Status: Not Evaluated (N.E.) Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
