Family:  Arhynchobatidae (Softnose skates)
Max. size:  120 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 91 - 500 m
Distribution:  Southern Ocean: Orkney and South Shetland islands to the Antarctic Peninsula. Probably more widespread in continental waters into the Weddell Sea and eastward as well as into the Pacific Ocean sector westward. Southeast Pacific: Chile (Ref. 9068).
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Oviparous. Distinct pairing with embrace. Young may tend to follow large objects, such as their mother (Ref. 205). Eggs are oblong capsules with stiff pointed horns at the corners deposited in sandy or muddy flats (Ref. 205). Egg capsules are 15.66 cm long and 8.0 cm wide (Ref. 41249). Regularly taken as bycatch in trawl hauls and may be used as fishmeal. Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
