Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range - 350 m
Distribution:  Pacific Ocean: southern Japan and the Hawaiian Islands to New Zealand.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-15; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 15-15. Eye about 1/3 of head length. Eyelid well-developed. Dorsal spines hidden by groove when depressed. Scales large and deciduous. Attains 35 cm SL.
