Etymology: Tropheus: Greek, tropaion = defeat, a memorial of a fighting war, trophy; because of their specialized teeth were such an obvious feeding adaptation (Ref. 45335).

Africa: Endemic to Lake Tanganyika but does not occur in both ends of the lake.
Do not form schools. Occurs over solid rock, either anchored and part of the hard core of the coast, interlocking rubble, or even sandstone slabs lining a beach but not loose pebbles rolling about in the surf or silted habitats (Ref. 6770).
