Indo-West Pacific: St. Brandon's Shoal (western Indian Ocean) through Indonesia to the Tuamoto Islands, north to the Ryukyus.
Occurs in deep seaward reefs. One collection outside Micronesia was made at 15 m (Ref. 1602). Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Exhibits sexual dimorphism (Ref. 37816). Taken occasionally by bottom fishing (Ref. 1602). Marketed fresh.
