Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); rubricroceus: From the words ruber, meaning red; and croceus, saffron color (Ref. 10294).

Occurs in bedrock-bottomed and rubble-bottomed pools of clear, fast headwaters, creeks (Ref. 5723) and streams (Ref. 10294).
