Etymology: Paraspinibarbus: Greek, para = the side of + Latin, pinna, spina = thorn + Latin, barbus = barbel (Ref. 45335).
The current genus of the species is unclear in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Jul. 2010: Ref. 84883) (valid species and synonyms are not allocated the same current accepted name).

Forward directed spine in front of dorsal origin; lower lip very thick, with complete post-labial groove; 4 faint, incomplete bars in juveniles (Ref. 43281). Deepest part of body situated in origin of dorsal fin and abdomen slightly rounded; snout blunt; barbels 2 pairs, rostral one thin and maxillary one quite thick and strong (Ref. 45536).
Asia: Laos, Viet Nam and China.
Length reaches to at least 40 cm SL (Ref. 43281).
