Etymology: Hepsetus: Greek, epsetas, -e, -on = boiled, but there is the following sentence: "oí epsetoi" = certain fishes, and also could be related to "psetta" = grouper (Ref. 45335); odoe: Specific name refers to the local names in Adangme language of Hepsetus specimens in Ghana: 'Akawo nyagbe', which means 'dog-like teeth' and 'akawo' which means 'attacker' or 'predator' (Dankwa 2003)(Ref. 88135).

Africa: from the Sassandra River (Ivory Coast) in the west to the Shari River (Central African Republic) in the east, and southwards up to the Kribi/Kienke River (Cameroon)(Ref. 88135). Reports from outside this area refer to other Hepsetus species (Ref. 88135, 93279, 93907).
Seems to prefer upper river courses or small rivers where Hydrocynus are absent or scarce (Ref. 2914, 81278, 81637). Adults occur in most coastal rivers, lakes and swamps (Ref. 3569).
Builds a free-floating bubblenest.
