Etymology: Oxyzygonectes: Greek, oxy = sharp + Greek, zygon = yoke + Greek, nekton = swimmer (Ref. 45335).

Central America: Pacific drainages, between Poneloya, Nicaragua and Río Salado on the Azuero Peninsula, Panama.
Many inhabit brackish waters, found in rivers of low elevation, up to 15 m above seal level. Feed on detritus, algae and sometimes on terrestrial insects (Ref. 36880). 35 cm max TL (Ref. 2059). Not a seasonal killifish. Has been bred in captivity (Ref. 41756).
