Etymology: Noturus: Greek, noton = back + Greek, oura = tail; refred to the position of the tail over the back (Ref. 45335); elegans: elegans meaning elegant, referring to the handsome pigment pattern (Ref. 10294).

North America: restricted to the Green River drainage in Kentucky and Tennessee, USA (Ref. 5723). Individuals from the Duck River originally allocated to N. elegans are N. fasciatus, the latter restricted to the Duck River system and two minor tributaries of the lower arm of the Tennessee River, Tennessee (Ref. 56218).
Inhabits gravel riffles and runs of clear creeks and small rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294).
