Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); leuciodus: From the words leucos, meaning white; and eiodus, appearance (Ref. 10294).

North America: Green, Cumberland and Tennessee River drainages in Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, USA. Also in extreme upper Savannah River drainage in North Carolina and Georgia, and New River drainage in Virginia and North Carolina.
Inhabits rocky pools and runs of creeks and small to medium rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294).
