Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); ariommus: ariommus, meaning large eye (Ref. 10294).

Inhabits clear, gravel-bottomed, flowing pools and runs of creeks and small to medium rivers (Ref. 5723, 10294).
