Africa: within the drainage basin of the Nile (Blue, White, Lake Edward) and may be confined to this system. It is likely that records from the Congo basin and southern Africa are based on misidentification.
Occurs mainly in rocky areas. Feeds on phytobenthos, debris and mud. Juveniles may feed on zooplankton (Ref. 28714).
