Etymology: Crenicichla: Latin, crenulatus = cut, clipped + Greek, kichle = wrasse (Ref. 45335); hu: Name from a Guaraní word (hû) that means black, referring to the ground color
of the body and fins.

The arroyo Piray-Miní, the type and only-known locality, has clear and rapidly flowing water; depth is variable, 0.20 to 1.40 m, and the bottom consists of mud, sand, and mostly stones, with some areas having scarce submerged vegetation (Ref. 84540).
