Indian Ocean: Mauritius, Comoros, Maldives, and Seychelles. Replaced in the western Pacific by the closely related Canthigaster leoparda Lubbock & Allen 1979.

Inhabits clear lagoon and seaward reefs. Secretive, often in holes or under ledges. Feeds on a variety of algae, sponges and invertebrates (Ref. 9710).
