Asia: India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaya, Indonesia (Sumatra and Java), Borneo, and Viet Nam (Ref. 4832). Known from the Chao Phraya and Mekong basins (Ref. 26336).
Occurs in swift, clear streams with sandy or gravelly bottom; also found in large rivers. Burrows into the bottom (Ref. 4832). Enters flooded fields (Ref. 12975). Found in the basin-wide mainstream of the lower Mekong (Ref. 36667).
