Etymology: Tylochromis: Greek, tylos = callus + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); regani: Named for C. Tate Regan whose pioneering work at the British Museum of National History laid the foundation for many studies of African freshwater fishes (Ref. 52346).

Vertebrae: 28 - 29. Diagnosis: 37-40 lateral line scales; terminal canal bearing scales of the upper branch do not descend scale rows; 2 series of scales between the upper lateral line and the anterior part of the lower; 15-17 gill-rakers along lower limb of first arch; entire premaxillary oral valve; 28 vertebrae; inferior vertebral apophysis of the standard Tylochromis type; lower pharyngeal jaw never extremely robust with mill-like molariform teeth extending over the dentigerous surface; 10-15 relatively stout outer row teeth and usually only one inner row on the lower jaw (Ref. 52346).
Benthic macrophage (Ref. 52346). Mainly feeds on plants and insect larvae (Ref. 52307).
