Etymology: Tylochromis: Greek, tylos = callus + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); mylodon: Named by Regan (1920) presumably in reference to the mill-like molariform pharyngeal dentition of this species (Ref. 52346). More on author: Regan.

Vertebrae: 28. Diagnosis: lateral line count of 38-43 scales; 16-17 closely packed gill-rakers along the lower limb of the first arch; extremey robust lower pharyngeal jaw with mill-like molariform teeth occupying at least two thirds of the dentigerous surface; third pore of mandibular laterosensory canal enlarged compared to the size of the preceding pores (Ref. 52346).
Benthic macrophage (Ref. 52346). Feeds mainly on insects and their larvae, but also (in small quantities) on crustaceans and molluscs (Ref. 52307). Maternal mouthbrooder (Ref. 52346). Marked intolerance to oxygen lack (Ref. 246).
