Environment / Climate / Range
Ecology
Freshwater; benthopelagic; pH range: 7.4 - 8.4; dH range: 7 - 30. Tropical; 23°C - 27°C (Ref. 12468), preferred ?; 3°S - 9°S
Africa: endemic to Lake Tanganyika and distributed in the southern part of the lake (Ref. 46829).
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 15.0 cm TL male/unsexed; (Ref. 5655)
Very common cichlid of the shallow intermediate habitat (Ref. 46829, 52921). Has been caught at a depth of 25 m (Ref. 53528). Usually solitary and hovers well above the ground; prefers sand and digs large crater-shaped nests, even when there rocks offering good shelters nearby, a fact that shows that the choice of a nest site can be very revealing of a species ecology (Ref. 6770). Carnivorous, preys on fish (Ref. 6770, 53528). Also feeds on invertebrates (Ref. 46829).
